Free speech is a necessity
The Militant’s March 27 article on the breakup of the March 2 appearance at Middlebury College by conservative author Charles Murray (The Bell Curve) struck exactly the right note on this unfortunate, but all too common, exercise of campus censorship today. I congratulate Alyson Kennedy for her timely and straightforward intervention in the discussion triggered by this event.

She is absolutely right that we must “confront” and “debate” reactionary ideas that threaten the interests of the working class, not suppress and legitimize them by handing their proponents the mantle of defenders of free speech. Unfortunately, this suppressive “PC” culture, promoted by budding meritocrats in academia today, is all too common.

Defending freedom of speech and discussion is a necessity for all working people seeking to confront the deepening crisis of capitalism, and I welcome the Socialist Workers Party taking it on!
