Socialist speaks at
immigrant rights rally
Militant/Carole Lesnick

SAN FRANCISCO—Lea Sherman, Socialist Workers candidate for California governor, speaks to rally of some 50 people here outside the offices of Attorney General Edmund Brown October 5, protesting the federal anti-immigrant Secure Communities program (see article on front page).

“If elected I would refuse to implement the program,” Sherman said. “My campaign calls for the immediate legalization of all immigrants now, which is necessary to unify the working class… . We need to build a political party of labor, based on the trade unions, independent of the Democrats and Republicans, the parties of the bosses. Such a labor party would fight for the interests of all working people.”
