An eight-week campaign to expand the Militant’s circulation proceeded at a steady pace in its second week. Supporters of the paper are slightly behind schedule, having sold 571 subscriptions out of international goals totaling more than 2,400.

Protest actions organized by working people against the impact of the capitalist economic crisis are a great place to sell subscriptions. “We decided to raise our goal because of continued opportunities and the hearing we are getting,” writes Angel Lariscy, a garment worker from Newark, New Jersey, where supporters of the paper raised their quota by 30 over the weekend. “Workers are hungry to discuss politics and appreciate the concrete demands raised by the Socialist Workers campaign that the Militant is covering.”

Supporters of the paper in New Jersey sold 15 subscriptions at a rally at the state capitol in Trenton against the closing of Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield. After selling 19 subscriptions to truck drivers protesting high fuel prices April 1, “we went back April 6 to talk to truckers and sold five subscriptions and two copies of Cuba and the Coming American Revolution,” reports Lariscy. That book is available at half price, $5, with any subscription to the Militant.

“Great reception to the Militant and the Socialist Workers campaign” among truck drivers in Iowa, writes Frank Forrestal from Des Moines. Supporters of the paper in that city also sold two subscriptions at Iowa State University in Ames after Socialist Workers Party presidential candidate Róger Calero spoke there.

From discussions among truckers to actions leading up to May Day mobilizations for immigrant rights, there are ample opportunities in the coming weeks to expand the Militant’s readership. The drive ends May 18. To get involved, contact distributors listed on page 8.
