Some 1,500 copper miners voted to strike in the first week of July after working for a year without a contract at Asarcos mines, mills, and smelters around Tucson, Arizona, and at the companys refinery in Amarillo, Texas. The company is demanding a wage freeze and cuts in medical and pension benefits from the workers, who are represented by several different unions including the United Steelworkers of America, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and the International Union of Operating Engineers.
